How do you choose an obstetrician?  Being pregnant is a difficult time.  There are so many unknowns.  There are so many opinions. OMG the opinions.  Do this, don’t do that.  Studies say this and studies say that.  It is difficult to know what to believe.  You definitely can not trust everything you hear on social media.

Arguably, it can be one of the most important decisions of your entire life.  Having a good doctor is critical to your care and birthing experience.

Here are some tips for getting started.

  1. Make sure they are on board with your plan, but be flexible enough to realize that things change quickly.   I have said it a million times, it is much better to have a doctor that’s competent than a doctor who is nice.  While rating sites are available and you should read them with an open mind, Make your own decisions.  Reviews from friends and family are probably more reliable.
  2. If you are going with a doula or midwife, also have a plan B for an obstetrician.  Why?  Again, because things can go sideways quickly.  Sometimes you need a hospital.  It is better to plan ahead no matter what your plan is.
  3. Know what your insurance covers and make sure the doctor you want is in your network.  Insurance is kind of a mess so have it ironed out before you give birth.

Most of all, appreciate this moment.  It’s one of the most exciting times of your life.
